Best Sewing Machine for Kids: The Complete Guide

Sewing can be great fun for your kid. Not only he or she will learn how to sew and possibly earn some extra money later, but it will help them develop motor and other skills.

If your kid really likes sewing, you can start by teaching him or her how to sew by hand and add machine sewing later. BEST SEWING MACHINE FOR KIDS

Best sewing machines for kids are those we consider kid-friendly sewing machines. These machines are safe, easy to work on and help your kid develop imagination, and best of all, turn all the ideas into reality.

This will influence their self-esteem and make their growth and growing up easier.

Before you decide your kid needs this, it’s good to get to know what is that your kid wants, what’s the reason and what’s the goal he or she wants to accomplish.

What does your child need? How to choose a good sewing machine for kids?

We all have the same questions in our heads and what we worry most of all is our kids’ safety!

I’m here to show you that even a ten – year – old kid can learn how to sew. All right, probably not everything (like a coat or a silk dress – I’ll give you that) but some basic stuff – definitely.

Let’s go through the most important features, step by step!

What are your child’s needs?

First of all, kids want to have fun. They need to enjoy what they do. Otherwise, you’ll get the reversed effect.

If your kid doesn’t want to sew, try not to push too hard. Imagine someone’s pushing you to do something you don’t want! What would that job look like? You see?

If you believe that sewing is something your kid should devote some time to, introduce him or her slowly. Show them some interesting sewing videos, show them finished products you yourself made.

If you have a boy, show him how to fix or change some part on the sewing machine, or maybe how to set up a sewing machine.
Show your kid sewing is all about joy and imagination, not something they have to do!

If, on the other hand, you have a kid that’s into sewing, it’s easier. Help them by playing videos or work with them. You can pay for some online courses. They can be great!

Your kid shouldn’t be younger than 6 when he or she starts sewing. This is some adequate age because kids of this age have mostly developed necessary motor skills. They have enough knowledge to understand what you’re saying.

This is important because a six or a seven-year-old kid knows how to take care of him or herself!

I really have to accent it’s tremendously important to find the right approach. If you want your kid to learn how to sew show them all the good sides and work with them. Teamwork – that’s the most important!

Small tip – it can be helpful to tell your kid something about the history of the sewing machine. This can easily attract them and make things more fun.

Best starter sewing machine for kids

You have to admit that teaching your kid how to sew is one good life skill. Not only it can be entertaining, but it can also help your kid later when he or she grows up. If nothing else, you’ll be sure it’ll be able to sew his or her clothes, or to make a nice creative T-shirt.

But, not all sewing machines on the market are equally easy to work on and adjusted to children. Best starter sewing machine for kids

Some are more suitable than others!

There are some features you should pay attention to before buying a sewing machine for your child and will deal with them in a special paragraph.

Basically, you need to take care of safety, how easy it is to use a certain sewing machine and of course – price!

There are some pretty small and handy machines on the market today that will get the job done without representing trouble for your kid.

Almost every manufacturer has at least one of these, small and handy sewing machines, that will be great for teaching your kid some basic stuff about sewing.

You can choose it with a smaller number of threads, with lower speed (or adjustable).

Whichever you choose, it’s crucially important to present this as fun and your kid won’t have any troubles learning how to sew!

How to choose the right sewing machine for a kid?

I’ve mentioned earlier several steps every parent should follow – safety, easiness and price.

Let’s chitchat about them!

Before any shopping, especially when it comes to machines we need to mop up some important things. Since we talk about kids here, we need to be extra careful.

None of us wants their kid to get hurt. That’s why safety comes first.

If we want our kid to learn how to sew, sewing toys won’t be enough. That’s why we need the real one! How to choose the right sewing machine for 10 year old

We need a reliable machine. That’s why you should search the feet that attach in a solid way. This way you’ll avoid your kid getting hurt (he or she won’t stitch their fingers along with the material)!

Some sewing machine models include pedals, so therefore look for safety features to escape pinching.

There are machines that provide manual control of speed and this is great because you can set the best speed for your kid.

Embroidery machines can be a lot of fun because they provide your kid to embroider their favorite movie or cartoon actors. This will really make sewing fun and instigate them to do some more. Isn’t this what you wanted in the first place?

You don’t have to waste tons of money on a machine for your kid, especially if he or she is a beginner. Instead, investigate facts, search as much information as possible and then buy!

For example, you don’t have to buy a machine that supports a lot of different stitches. Instead, buy one with one or two. In the end, you are not buying a machine for professional use but for learning.

Only if your kid had already learned how to sew and wants to take a step forward is when you should consider buying some more complex sewing machine.

So, to conclude, before you buy your kid a sewing machine, search out and collect all possible information and then buy. Where will you buy it, it’s up to you. You can either go to the local dealer or buy it online.

Check the machine’s performances and features and again, how safe it is. Eventually, don’t pay this machine too much if it’s not necessary because your goal is to make this fun to your kid, not to make him or her worry about some expensive sewing machine. This way none of you (your kid and you) will have to worry about anything.

Sewing is fun, teach them that and your job is halfway done!

Sewing classes for kids

Like with everything else (Math, Science and similar) you can pay sewing classes for your kid.

There are dozens of offers available online.

We all know kids simply adore computers. Instead of just playing, you can pay them some sewing lessons and make this skill learning funnier than ever.

The prices are different. You can find them for 20 dollars and higher. Almost everyone offers first class for free.

This is great because you can take several different teachers and programs and decide, together with your kid, which one suits him or her best!

Mostly, this type of educational sites offers short – time lessons. This is great because your kid won’t feel bored and uninterested. You’ll notice that no matter classes last 25 or 30 minutes your kid is learning and improving.

Search out everything you find interesting, consult with your kid and start!

Let’s see what some of the best sewing machines for beginners are!

What to look for in an ideal sewing machine for kids?

Generally speaking, sewing machines are easy to use. It’s just that some are more kid-friendly than the others.

As I’ve mentioned so many times, what every parent worries most about is kid’s safety. And, yes, that is very important.

Before you decide which machine you’re going to buy, check the safety features.

You want your kid to develop some real skills. Combination of these real features and safety components should be your goal. This is why I’m not a big fan of sewing toys. If you want your kid to actually learn something, you’ll need a real sewing machine.

What to pay attention to?

What to look for in an ideal sewing machine for kids

Firstly, feet.  Look for the feet that attach to avoid hurting their little fingers.

Next, pedals. Most modern sewing machines have a push button for start. This is great because your kid gets to choose when to start and when to stop sewing.

Most machines allow speed control. This is one great advantage because your kid chooses the sewing speed. They will choose the speed that fits them most!

Another great feature is embroidery. You can find great embroidery machines for home use that are pretty cheap. Look for the machine that offers embroidery besides ordinary sewing. This way your kid will have fun putting favorite characters on their clothes. If they like what they’ve made they will want to do more. What else could you wish for?

There are so many available machines that choosing the right one is never easy.

Before buying, consider all the factors.

Which one you’ll choose mostly depends on your kid’s skills. According to her or his experience, you’ll know how many stitches you need, do you want a separate embroidery machine or the one that besides regular stitching also allows embroidery.

Read reviews, see what are pros and cons for each machine you consider interesting.

Don’t make decisions before you’ve done the research, checked all the features and advantages.

When you gather all the information, choose the good sewing machine for your kid.

Next lines are reserved for some special features parents often ask me before they choose the perfect kid-friendly sewing machine!

Mechanical or Computerized?

This can be tricky.

Before you choose the sewing machine you want your kid to use, you should first consider your kid’s needs. Is it a fan of computer or not?

Although kids today enjoy spending time on computers it doesn’t necessarily mean he or she will be a fan of a computerized sewing machine.

Computerized sewing machines offer many advanced features and possibilities. We talk about many different types of stitches, built-in stitches, and buttonholes and so on. This can be a great advantage but if we consider everything, it’s not a professional seamstress that’s going to use this machine. After all, it’s a kid we’re talking about.

Here’s the deal. If your kid is a sewing beginner (which is mostly the case), he or she will use basic stitches. So, too many built-in stitches and different types of them could make the situation a bit complicated! Kids, especially younger could get confused.

The important is to first teach them how to do the basic sewing using regular stitches. If it appears your kid is a big fan of sewing and improves quickly, the slightest problem will be to buy a computerized sewing machine additionally, or simply replace the mechanical one!

I don’t mean to say computerized sewing machines are bad for your kid. Absolutely not. For an experienced user, they offer tons of possibilities. Speed control is much easier with a modern computerized sewing machine. But, let’s be real here. You want your son or daughter to learn the basics of sewing and to gain necessary skills to sew properly. Mechanical machines are simply better for that.

Most mechanical sewing machines are easier and cheaper to maintain. Your kid will be able to repair the machine him/herself and I know kids love that. It will become a part of their sewing adventure and get sewing closer to them. Isn’t this what you want?

And of course, the price. We all want what’s best for our kid but are we willing to spend a fortune on a sewing machine? You’re not a bad parent if you think about this feature, it’s completely normal. A mechanical sewing machine is cheaper (probably somewhere between 50$ and 100$, or even more). Think about that.

Stitch Variety

Are you even aware of how many stitches are there? Many, and all of them have different, special purposes!

Most commonly used are straight stitches but others don’t lag behind.

So, now one sewing machine can offer you different stitches such as: zigzag stitches, running, back, satin, and chain stitches. Many of them are built-in. This means that they are already integrated into your sewing machine. This is great for all those who want to sew as professionals.

Straight stitches are among the most popular and most necessary. Those are simple stitches used in ordinary sewing or embroidery made without looping the thread. They are used for making straight (broken and unbroken) lines, different shapes and full filling some shapes.

Chain stitches represent a series of looped stitches that resemble chain.

A zigzag stitch is a type of a lock stitch. It is mostly used in places where a straight stitch won’t do the work (e.g.  Reinforcing buttonholes).

Running stitches are used either in embroidery or hand sewing. You pass the needle in and out of the fabric. It runs through the fabric and is visual on the front part of the fabric more than on the lower.

Backstitch is a stitch made backward to the usual sewing direction. It is often used in embroidery to outline shapes.

Satin stitch represents a series of flat stitches used to cover a part of the background fabric.

These are just some stitches. Many of them have a sort of sub-categories used for different purposes. Which one you are going to use depends on your skills and of course, your project!

Reliability

This is an important factor when you choose the right sewing machine for your child.

You don’t want to buy a machine that breaks easily. This would mean throwing away your money!

If you are not sure how to decide which a good sewing machine is for kids, I suggest you go through reviews of the machine that seems to be your choice. sewing machine Reliability

I’ve chosen several kid-friendly machines and done the research on them so you wouldn’t have to waste your time.

Either of them has great features and it’s completely reliable. This means you won’t have to repair them all the time, losing both your money and your time.

A good sewing machine doesn’t only imply a variety of features. It also has to have easily replaceable components which are easy to buy and don’t cost a fortune.

As I’ve mentioned, if your kid repairs his or her sewing machine him/herself this will improve his/her self-esteem and self-reliance. This is a good thing. That’s why it’s important to choose the machine you can easily fix and set up in the comfort of your home.

Also, threading, winding the bobbin, threading the needle should be as easy as possible.

Choose the sewing machine that has a long-term warranty. This expresses its quality mostly.

I always advise you to make a plan and do thorough research on each machine you find appropriate and then decide which one you’ll buy. When you have all the information it’s easier to decide!

Safety Features

Both your child and the sewing machine need to be in a good shape to get the job done!

Safety is the most important factor for all, not only kids. That’s why you need your machine to be upstanding.

Sewing machines are powerful and fast. They are convenient. But if you and your kid don’t take precautions, someone could get hurt!

First, make sure you always unplug your machine after you finish sewing. Some of you don’t think it’s important but the sudden power outage and possibly strong currency that can appear after power is back can kill your machine.

Make sure your machine is always unplugged when you clean it or change something, thread or anything else.

I always repeat this since you need to have this habit. Your kid will look up to you. If you do this, your kid will do it too, and you won’t have to worry.

The cord of the sewing machine has to be in shape always. If you notice any changes, replace it immediately. As a precaution, don’t put anything on the cord, make sure it’s placed somewhere you won’t step on it and watch out the way you are unplugging it!

Teach your kid to keep his fingers safe. They shouldn’t be near the feeder. If your kid is a beginner let him or her do things slowly to avoid hurting.

Girls should watch out for the hair. Many sewing machines are moving pretty fast while they are working. This means it can easily catch the hair. Tell your little girl to be extra careful or to tighten her hair in a ponytail.

Tips for extra precaution

  • Listen to your machine. If it starts sounding strangely unplug it, try if you can discover a problem or take it to a pro!
  • Always use the appropriate needle for the appropriate fabric.
  • Always work with enough light. This is important not only for the looks but your eyes as well!

Follow these safety tips and you and your kid will be safe. If you do all these things, your kid will, too!

How Young Can Children Start Learning to Sew?

A question that somehow imposes itself is at what age should kids start sewing?

The answer isn’t simple. It honestly depends on a kid.

It is possible that a 4-year-old kid starts sewing but I don’t think that’s as a good idea. How Young Can Children Start Learning to Sew

If you are interested in sewing, professionally or for a hobby, it’s ok to allow your three or four-year-old kid to help you with something. It’s not such a great idea to leave him or her alone with a sewing machine. He or she could get hurt!

So, as I’ve already mentioned above, the approximate appropriate time to start is at the age of six or seven. These kids aren’t grownups, but they understand the meaning of injury. They are aware of what pinching means, they know it hurts.

Then, at this age, they also have well-developed instinct to avoid hurting themselves. Not to mention that they know how to read and write, which is more than helpful. A 3 or 4-year-old child will hardly have the idea of what sewing is. And we all know how hard it is to learn something we don’t understand!

A six-year-old kid isn’t a grown-up kid. It’s still just a kid so you’ll need to supervise them. Depending on a kid this can refer to supervising from time to time or all the time.

Your job is to teach them how to protect themselves primarily. After this, you teach them how to sew.

Sewing is great because it will bring their creativity to the surface. If your kid gets a good start with necessary instruction he or she will simply love it!

My Five Simple Rules

To summarize all the things you need to pay attention to (some of them were mentioned), I’ve extracted 5 simple basic rules you should follow. Hope they’ll help you the way they helped me!

  1. Make sewing fun. We talked about this. Don’t represent sewing as a must. It can be great fun so let your kid enjoy it!
  2. Supervise your kid until you’re absolutely sure your kid learned everything needed. It’s not until you’re sure that you’ll feel relaxed.
  3. We talked about safety over and over again. Teach your kids how to properly protect themselves and the machine.
  4. Make sure he or she uses the machine properly. Teach your kid to read the manual, follow the instructions and listen to advise!
  5. Show your kid that besides being fun, sewing is great life skill that he or she will eventually find extremely useful. Tell him that he is learning something very important. This way you’ll not only make him fall in love with sewing but also make him proud of himself what will result in high self-esteem and self-confidence.

Should we buy a toy sewing machine?

I know a lot of you think that sewing toys are great!

I can’t say they aren’t. If you have a very small child that can’t use a real sewing machine than that’s all right. But, if you have a kid that’s six or seven years old these toys aren’t such a great idea.

These are kids that can already use a real sewing machine so why buying them a toy?

A toy will make a barrier between what a kid really wants to learn and what he or she can do with a toy. No real sewing skill will be developed with a toy. And, you wouldn’t believe how frustrating this can be to a kid.

I got a sewing toy machine when I was ten. All I wanted was to make clothes for my dolls. Can you imagine how disappointed I was when I discovered I can’t do that? Instead, I could only imagine what that would look like.

If you want your kid to learn how to sew for real, it’s better to collect money and wait for a discount than buying a toy.

Price

Also one very important feature-money.

How much money is reasonable to invest in a (kid’s) sewing machine?

Let’s see what the numbers say! BEST SEWING MACHINE FOR KIDS price

The price varies. You can find a sewing machine that costs 50 dollars and yet it’s in a good shape.

These aren’t bad machines just because they’re cheap. They are mostly manual, not computerized and have fewer options. But, if your kid is a beginner these machines can be perfect.

On the other hand, there are sewing machines that cost several thousand dollars. These are mostly computerized well-featured sewing machines. Professionals use them, so you don’t need to throw away your money.

I’ve made a couple of reviews of good sewing machines for kids, so you can check if you fit in!
